The Adventures of Whatley Tupper

The Adventures of Whatley Tupper, by Rudolf Kerkhoven & Daniel Pitts is a modern choose your own adventure style book for adults.  Whatley Tupper is an A-grade janitor at a B-grade university about to become entwined in C-grade fiction!

READ THE REVIEWS:

“When I was a kid, Choose Your Own Adventure(CYOA) books were big, and my favorite brand was the Goosebumps ones by R.L. Stine because the plot lines were significantly weirder and more twisted than your average CYOA.  I think that is why I ultimately enjoyed The Adventures of Whatley Tupper–because it was super weird…. The plot lines are ridiculous in the very best way.  The story lines are all fast paced and the flow of events is abrupt and awkward, but that is what makes it funny and entertaining.  I really love just plain old weird, off kilter stuff, and Whatley Tupper totally fits the bill… for hours of disgustingly ridiculous fun, the book is a great price.”

“I checked out other interactive fiction ebooks, and this was one of my favorites. Lots of strange stuff happening, some wildly divergent threads, and a healthy dose of WTF keep this ebook interesting even after multiple reads. Will this be the next big trend in ebooks? I sure hope so.”

J.A. Konrath from review on Amazon.com

“The concept is simple enough, a “choose your own adventure” book for adults. Is this great literature, the next Hemmingway, Dickens, or Fitzgerald? Of course not. Is the plot, actually any of the many potential plots, a fantastic story? No, not really – at least none that I found.

But all these questions miss the point. What Whatley Tupper aims to be is fun (it is). Funny (that too). One review I saw called it a guilty pleasure, a description I can’t argue with either. It’s strange, ridiculous, and downright weird at times (if you pick the right – or is that wrong – choice). If you don’t like how it turns out, just try again. For a bunch of laughs and a ton of fun Whatley Tupper may the perfect choice.”

Big Al’s Books and Pals (08/03/2011)

The Adventures of Whatley Tupper is representative of the boundless creativity, raw energy, and just plain sheer fun and entertainment that independent authors are capable of and deserve recognition for accomplishing. There are things done with this story that is only possible through the new digital revolution in publishing that is the ebook. While it follows the Choose Your Own Adventure style of books from when we were kids, in this case by way of embedded hyperlinks which can be selected on your ereader device, the authors take the reader on a wild, wild ride that’s worth every penny you spend for this title.”

Digital Spotlight Fiction Review 15/09/2010

“A “choose-your-own-adventure” for adults, “The Adventures of Whatley Tupper” is a riot. This ever-changing book lets you decide what choices Whatley makes, and that determines where his adventure leads you. Just like the kid version from the 70s-90s, but with decidedly adult themes, this one book provides you with a plethora of potential storylines… The stories ranged from silly to downright ridiculous, but I was thoroughly entertained the entire way through. I could see the author creating an entire set, and re-igniting the choose-your-own-adventure series fad again, this time for adults.”

“Even if you’ve never read a choose your own adventure book, this is still a great choice for anyone who owns a Kindle.”

“A very slick and well-done little experiment… 4/5 Rating”

CHEATS:

What’s better than being able to cheat while still abiding by high moral standards?  Here I’ll sporadically update cheats/hints if you’re a reader of “The Adventures of Whatley Tupper” and think you’re missing out on certain sections.

Do you want to travel into a perfect, parallel universe?

This is one of my favourite sections, especially after having read many other sections first.

  • Go back and investigate the stall and search for clues.
  • Tell Dr. Leery about the curious events in the bathroom
  • (the next choice doesn’t matter, either will bring you to the next section)
  • Hope that the other Whatley takes care of Nudge now that he’s distracted

Do you want to question Whatley’s sexuality?

This is where Rick Swanson gets his time to shine.

  • Forget about the incident and find a safer place to work in
  • Cast aside your fears and kiss the exotic Maria Sanchez
  • (the next choice doesn’t matter, either will bring you to the next section)
  • Try to appease the volatile Rick Swanson and wrestle him

Do you want Lenny Wilkinson to get a job at Denny’s?

Just sheer silliness.

  • Follow the trail of clutter and give chase
  • Go upstairs and investigate the storage room
  • Make a bold dash for the power drinks to cripple the operation
  • (the next choice doesn’t matter…)

Do you want to book a relaxing Alaskan cruise?

Really stupid, but you get to look at some lovely travel photos.

  • Follow the trail of clutter and give chase
  • Go upstairs and investigate the storage room
  • Try to escape through the door
  • Follow Vince’s lead and hide behind the vending machines
  • Book a cruise…

Do you want Whatley to pick up?

Whatley doesn’t have a lot of luck with the ladies, so it’s nice to see him come out ahead sometimes.

  • Go back and search for clues
  • Pretend that nothing is wrong and find someone else
  • (the next choice doesn’t matter… there are a lot of these, aren’t there?)
  • Lunge at Nudge to knock the gun out of his hand
  • Verona should keep a weapon (i.e. a heavy book) in hand
  • Snap out of it and get after Nudge
  • Take care of things right now and see who’s inside the room
  • Offer to take Verona back to his place

Do you want to control the shots in a fight with Robert Nudge?

You can get trapped here forever.  It’s like a crappy video game.  A very crappy video game.

  • (follow the same instructions as to take Verona home, but instead of asking her to come to your place, return to the university to finish up your nightly shift)

At this point, you’re in the fight.  It takes the right combination to get through.  Don’t go for the gun.

Do you want to take on the head of Q-Services with the aide of Marco, the Denny’s night manager?

Parallels the main story line when Whatley reunites with his brother, but this time with unstable Marco at his side.

  • Go back to the stall to search for clues
  • Pretend that nothing is wrong and find someone else
  • (the next choice makes no difference… I’ll be honest, we got lazy at times)
  • Decide to wait, hoping for a better opportunity
  • Call the paramedics (not the police!)
  • (again, the next choice doesn’t matter… but doesn’t the guise of a choice make you feel like you’re in control?)

Do you want to read the ultra-happy ending where all of Whatley’s dreams come true?

This was the last part Daniel and I wrote.  It’s the grand finale where, for once, things go well for Whatley.  It’s also the end of the book (with the About the Authors on the final page)

  • Follow the trail of clutter and give chase
  • Continue on down to the boiler room
  • Find someone to help investigate Vince’s disappearance
  • Resist temptation and push the box back into its hiding place
  • Order the chicken (not the fish!)
  • (choose whatever you want… this time it’s Whatlito who won’t give you a real choice)
  • (this choice is a fake one… again, it doesn’t matter)
  • Try and contact Maria in secret
  • Wait for Whatlito

From here, it’s quite obvious.

Do you want to end up being a figment of Tom Selleck’s imagination?

Follow the same choices for the ultra-happy ending, but instead of trying to contact Maria in secret, go back to Maria’s house and confront El Conjeo directly.

Do you want to discover the identity of “The Voice“?

Ever heard of Peter Cullen?  You may think you haven’t, but trust me, you’ve heard him before…

  • Follow the trail of clutter and give chase
  • Continue down the hallway into the boiler room
  • Find someone to help investigate Vince’s disappearance
  • Peruse through the Penthouse magazine
  • Consider himself free of the dead-weight and continue
  • (this next choice is another tease)

Do you want to travel back in time to when Whatley first propositioned Maria?

Short, sweet, and stupid.

  • Go back to the stall to search for clues
  • Trust the old man and talk to him
  • (doesn’t matter)
  • Hope the other Whatley takes care of Nudge now that he’s distracted
  • Catch up with Dr. Leery and explain the situation
  • Return to Dr. Leery’s office and try and return home

Do you want Whatley to become engulfed with envy of the life of his perfect Parallel-Universe clone?

Follow the same choices as the last one, only don’t return to Dr. Leery’s office, and instead flee from the washroom to find the other Whatley.
